Championship of the Republic of Belarus in Xiangqi Chinese Chess among Students

On March 29, 2025, the fifth anniversary Championship of the Republic of Belarus in Xiangqi Chinese chess for students took place at the Belarusian State Economic University.
Cups, prizes, and medals were awarded in different age categories among students and schoolchildren. About 60 participants took part in the tournament, including 4 citizens of the People's Republic of China. The goal of the tournament was to attract the attention of the student youth to the values of China's intangible cultural heritage, to develop and promote the game of Xiangqi in the Republic of Belarus, and to cultivate an interest in the Chinese language and culture through the game.
The tournament was facilitated by the Confucius Center of the Republican Institute of Sinology at BGEU. The "Xiangqi" chess club has been one of the leading activities of the Confucius Center since 2018. The event was organized in partnership with the Xiangqi chess federation, which provided the equipment, developed the tournament system, and formed the judging panel. Most participants are members of Chinese chess clubs, trained by coaches from the federation.
The winner among students was 24-year-old Dan Jiazhui from BGEU, and the main tournaments among schoolchildren were won by siblings: 16-year-old Alexey Budkevich from Minsk's Secondary School No. 76 and 12-year-old Anna Budkevich from the same school.
The championship marked the first event of 2025 dedicated to the tenth anniversary of the development of Chinese chess in Belarus, which began in 2015 with a small group of enthusiasts. During this period, a Xiangqi federation was established, encompassing hundreds of enthusiasts and becoming the largest outside of Asia.
Xiangqi is the most popular intellectual game in modern China, and with the rapid development of the Chinese economy and growing interest in China and its culture in the West, it is gaining prominence in the cultural space of the Western world alongside traditional chess. Playing Xiangqi not only develops intellect but also serves as a good way to understand Chinese culture and establish intercultural contacts and economic relations with Chinese partners.
