BSEU Freshmen Learn About Student Life Opportunities and Youth Organizations

On September 4, a major meeting took place in the assembly hall of the Belarusian State Economic University (BSEU), bringing together first-year students and the leaders of the university's key student organizations and bodies. The event aimed to introduce the new students to the university's infrastructure, civic initiatives, sports and cultural activities, and the system of legal and financial support.

Speakers included Karina Terekhova, Secretary of the BRSM (Belarusian Republican Youth Union) primary organization; Irina Dorokhova, Head of the Student Club; and Ekaterina Danilova, Head of the Sports Club. The meeting concluded with an address by Mikhail Bareisha, Chairman of the BSEU Student Trade Union primary organization.

While presenting the work of the BRSM, Karina Terekhova emphasized that the organization’s university-level operations differ significantly from the format found in schools, serving instead as a powerful launchpad for personal fulfillment. She noted that the organization's activities at BSEU span eight key areas, ranging from patriotic projects to media work and legal education.

The speaker highlighted the civic-patriotic track as fundamental; this area encompasses major projects such as "Flowers of the Great Victory," "15 Days to the Great Victory," and the national campaign "We Are Citizens of Belarus." Additionally, this area includes the activities of Youth Law Enforcement Squads (MOOP), whose members patrol the city alongside traffic police, district police officers, and the water rescue service (OSVOD).

The youth union leader placed special emphasis on the student work brigade movement, which is highly developed at the university. This year, the BSEU branch of the BRSM helped secure employment for over 1,200 students, offering positions at major manufacturing plants, bakeries, coffee shops, and courier services. In addition, the organization is actively developing a volunteer center, hosting international video conferences with students from other countries, and organizing sports events—including the 15-minute "People's Workout"—as well as seminars on media literacy and media work. To protect students' rights and provide legal education, monthly forums are held to facilitate dialogue between students and government officials.

Irina Dorokhova, Head of the BSEU Student Club, presented the creative side of university life. Offering warm words of encouragement to the first-year students, she described their university years as the best time for creation, bringing ideas to life, and making true friends. She urged the young people not to stay in the shadows, to take pride in their efforts, and to boldly take the initiative. Dorokhova emphasized the university's robust support system, noting that students never have to face problems alone and can always turn to deans, academic advisors, senior students, and student organization leaders for help. Outlining the cultural calendar, she announced events such as Freshman Days and inter-group competitions, the qualifying round for "Student of the Year," the traditional "Autumn Marathon" festival featuring 15-minute faculty performances, the "Vivat Freshman!" contest, the "Miss BSEU" spring showcase of grace and talent, the major week-long "Student Spring" festival, and the "We Live and Remember" project dedicated to Victory Day.

Ekaterina Danilova, Head of the Sports Club, continued the presentation on student opportunities. After welcoming the first-year students, she quoted the Head of State’s remark that one cannot become a manager without sports, emphasizing that discipline, training, and the drive for results shape the behavioral patterns essential for future leaders. Ekaterina Danilova introduced first-year students to BSEU’s packed sports calendar, ranging from inter-faculty championships and dormitory tournaments to district- and national-level competitions where the university’s top athletes represent the institution. She highlighted the unique "Infinity" cheerleading squad as a signature feature of the university, noted student-led initiatives such as hiking rallies and amateur running events, and invited everyone to join the university team for the Minsk Half Marathon.

The meeting concluded with an address by Mikhail Bareisha, Chairman of the BSEU Primary Student Trade Union Organization, representing the university's largest body, which unites over 96.7% of the student body. The union leader emphasized that the organization's key objective is to protect students' socio-economic rights through a close partnership with the university administration, based on an existing bilateral agreement. The trade union plays a role in addressing all issues vital to the student body—ranging from the approval of internal regulations, disciplinary procedures, and dormitory allocation policies to the distribution of incentive payments and scholarship supplements, tuition discounts for fee-paying students, and the transfer of high-achieving students to state-funded (tuition-free) spots.

Mikhail Bareisha detailed the extensive social support package available to trade union members. Students can access health and wellness services at the BNTU health center for just 15% of the standard cost, benefit from subsidized sanatorium-resort treatment, purchase half-year passes for the BSEU sports and fitness center’s pool and gym at a 50% discount, and participate in domestic excursions—the next of which is scheduled for Grodno. The trade union committee pays special attention to supporting socially vulnerable groups—such as orphans, low-income students, and students with families—by providing them with regular financial assistance.

Furthermore, the trade union organization actively monitors living conditions for the more than 3,500 residents of the student campus, compiles a database of alternative rental housing for those who did not secure a dormitory spot, conducts annual quality checks on food in university canteens and cafes, and oversees an 80-member student volunteer patrol that maintains order in university buildings while offering students the opportunity to earn an official income. In concluding his remarks, Mikhail Bareisha emphasized that the doors of the trade union committee are open to every student, and that any difficulty encountered will find a timely and practical solution there.
