BSEU Improves Its Position in the UI GreenMetric Sustainable University Rankings 2026!

The Belarus State Economic University has moved strengthened its position in the world's top 1000 in the UI GreenMetric Sustainable University Rankings 2026.

UI GreenMetric is an annual international ranking established by the University of Indonesia in 2010 that assesses the efforts of higher education institutions worldwide in the field of environmental sustainability.

The ranking is accredited by IREG Observatory on Academic Ranking and Excellence, an international organization that audits and certifies university ranking methodologies. UI GreenMetric became the world's first ranking to establish a voluntary standard for improving university infrastructure and actions toward sustainable development.

In 2026, the ranking methodology was significantly expanded, and the ranking received the nameUI GreenMetric Sustainable University Rankings. It is the world's largest system for assessing the institutional sustainability of higher education institutions.

Work on the ranking criteria requires universities to take a systematic approach. The ranking methodology includes 60 indicators grouped into 7 criteria. Each category has its own weight in the final score: energy and climate change – 20%, waste and transportation – 17% each, education and research – 13%, water resources and infrastructure – 11% each, governance and digitalization – 11%. The data provided by universities undergo verification: official documents, data sets and photographs confirming the stated indicators are assessed. This format rules out a formal approach and requires real changes in campus operations. BSEU's success is the result of coordinated work by several university units: the Center for System Analysis, the library, the Center for Scientific Research and the administrative and economic services. The Center for System Analysis carried out extensive work to collect, analyze and prepare documentation confirming the institution's high level of environmental responsibility. The activity of the faculties is also of considerable importance in this process. The leader among them is undoubtedly the Faculty of Marketing and Logistics, where the Department of Marketing organizes and holds the flagship project –the Green Fest Youth Environmental Festival.

In 2026, the ranking includes2,016 universities from110 countries, whereas a year earlier there were 1,745 from 105 countries. The expansion of geography and number of participants makes even maintaining one's position a difficult task, and improving it is an indicator of sustainable progress.

In 2025, BSEU debuted in the ranking and immediately became the best among Belarusian universities, taking 840th place. In 2026, the university not only improved its global position, rising to711th place, but also confirmed its level amid increased competition.

Among the 14 Belarusian universities included in the ranking, BSEU took2nd place. The top 10 of the national segment also included the Belarusian National Technical University (843rd in the world), Grodno State Medical University (883), Yanka Kupala State University of Grodno (886), International Sakharov Environmental Institute of Belarusian State University (937), Belarusian-Russian University (1016), Belarusian State University of Informatics and Radioelectronics (1096), Brest State A.S. Pushkin University (1402) and Mogilev State A. Kuleshov University (1433). Second place among Belarusian universities amid a growing number of participants is the result of consistent work to introduce sustainable development principles into educational, research and administrative activities.

For BSEU, participation in UI GreenMetric is not only a ranking indicator but also a guideline for further development. An improvement of 129 positions in a year shows that the chosen direction of work produces measurable results.
