FCTI took part in the laying of flowers at the memorial «Island of Courage and Sorrow»

On February 15, 1989, the withdrawal of Soviet troops from Afghanistan ended, the war in which lasted 9 years, 1 month and 18 days. On this memorable day, the faculty and students of the FCTI honored the memory of the soldiers-internationalists who gave their lives by laying flowers at the memorial «Island of Courage and Sorrow».

The event was attended by the secretary of the BRYU FCTI Anastasia Merkuryeva, group organizers of the Belarusian Republican Youth Union of 1-2 courses of the FCTI, the author of the music «Tango of Unfulfilled Hopes» (Afghani tango), the chairman of the youth commission under the republican council of the «Belarusian Public Association of Veterans» (BOOV), the head of the group for perpetuating the memory of those who died during MS BOOV, Professor of the Department of Physical Chemistry and Technology Konstantin Fedorovich Saevich, veteran internationalist Oleg Alexandrovich Golovach and head of the Department of Philosophy Alla Anatolyevna Golovach.

On the same day, a meeting was held with veteran internationalists of Afghanistan, who spoke in detail about that war and the heroism of the Belarusians. In addition, it was told about the war-internationalists of our university, who created the primary organization under the «Belarusian Union of Veterans of the War in Afghanistan».

About 30 thousand natives of Belarus served in Afghanistan from 1979 to 1989. Of these, 771 people died, 12 people are missing, more than one and a half thousand were injured and maimed, 718 became disabled. Today, more than 4,000 veterans of the war in Afghanistan live in Minsk alone, of which more than 200 are disabled, as well as 97 families - the parents and widows of dead internationalist soldiers.
